Friday Post: Conference Talk

Hey all,

For the past 2 months I’ve been heading up a small technical conference with my department.  We have done small 1 hour sessions before, but this was a lofty experiment.  14 talks, 5 hours, 2 tracks, with no budget.

It was a resounding success!  The Techrangers at UCF put on the Extended Tech Time Conference last Monday, July 1st, from 5pm to 10pm, in the Student Union.

We had over 60 attendees watch our talks while students, staff, and local companies talked about a wide variety of subjects.

We also had a Google Glass demo, which was really really cool.  Everyone seems to get “glass-face” the second they put it on.  It can only be described as getting a dumb grin, looking halfway up, and trying to focus both on whats on the screen and in front of you at the same time.  It only lasts a second but it makes for some really funny imagery.  It was tough to use it with my prescription glasses on, but this seriously makes me consider getting contacts.

I plan to have the videos up soon, but for now, here’s my talk about Gaming on the Raspberry Pi:

PiMAME

So I’ve been working for a week, trying to get this next release of PiMAME really stable.  The problem I keep running into is with DISPMANX and PiSNES/Dgen.  With DISPMANX, Dgen works, but PiSNES does not, without DISPMANX, PiSNES works but Dgen crashes.  I’m going to hold off on including DISPMANX and Dgen for this release.   The new things included in PiMAME 0.7.5 will be STELLA, the Atari 2600 emulator, and CaveStory.

This should be uploaded tonight.

Book

So the first drafts for the book I’ve been writing came back, and they have very / minor revisions.  I’m really excited to see this project coming alone, and hopefully published very very soon.

Friday Post: PiMAME 0.7.5

EDIT: Really sorry guys, I found a show stopping bug while uploading.  I had to cancel it.  I’m really sorry.  It’ll be up soon.

Hey everyone,

I’m happy to announce that I’m releasing the new PiMAME image this weekend.  I will be uploading it tonight and it should be on sourceforge asap.

The new features include:

  • Dispmanx graphics backend
  • Dgen Genesis emulator
  • Cavestory
  • Pikeyd GPIO key daemon.

On another note, the latest special edition of Linux Pro Magazine is all about the Raspberry Pi.  The DVD includes a bunch of different SD Card Images, including PiMAME.

Friday Post: Telepresence Robots!

Hey All,

First off, no PiMAME this week.  Still working out bugs.  It’ll be soon I promise 🙂

I’m 99% done with my book.  Content is all done!! Woo!  Now I’m just working on the preface.  I’m really excited to get back the edited version and do the final touches 😀 😀

Mike Dicillo created a really Arcade cabinet for PiMAME made entirely out of Lego.  It is freaking awesome!  http://www.mikedicillo.com/legocade/#

Onto the topic, my department got a cool new member this week.  A telepresence robot!  Specifically a Double Robotics unit.

It’s an iPad on a Segway, thats connected to the internet, and allows you to connect to it from anywhere in the world.  It was awesome to test it out and attend a conference in another building.  We had a coworker who is currently in another state connect to it and pilot it around the office.

We live in the future!

More PiMAME news soon 🙂

Friday Post: Neat Things

Hey All,

It has been a long week.  Star Trek Into Darkness was AMAZING!  Go see it now.  Stop reading.  Go to your theater, watch it, then come back here and finish reading.   It was that good.

SanderSiezen has made a really slick cocktail arcade cabinet, powered by PiMAME.  His entire build log has been published at his site.  I’m really impressed by the hinge used to hide the controls.  Great Job!

BarCamp Orlando

BarCamp Orlando is this weekend.  It’s basically a tech gathering un-conference.  People meet up in a central area, sign up to do talks, speak about awesome things, and network, all while enjoying the bar scene around downtown.

I am hoping to do some talking about PiMAME and the Raspberry Pi.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Friday Post: The Pi Hut

Hey all,

Sorry for the lateness, I went and saw Iron Man 3 last night and got home late.

Go see Iron Man 3.  If you liked the first two movies, you will like the third.  I thought it was great.

A fun announcement: The Pi Hut is now selling SD Cards with PiMAME preloaded on it.

If you are using the installer script, make sure you run the update script, as I have pushed a few changes.  The PiHut SD card already has the installer script included.

Have a great weekend!

PiMAME Installer Script

Hey everyone!

PiMAME Installer

I have just released the first version of the PiMAME Installer Script.  This script will allow you to turn any Raspbian install into a PiMAME installation.  It includes the ability to update installations  (and to remove PiMAME if you wish 🙁 … )

You can find it on Github at: https://github.com/ssilverm/pimame_installer

I would appreciate testing and feedback.  Also please feel free to contribute code and send a pull request.

PiMAME Bug Fix

I figured out the issue about the 8MB file size limit in the PiMAME uploader.  If you use the Installer or the Updater you should automatically get the fix.  If you wish to fix it manually follow these instructions:

sudo nano +674 /etc/php5/cgi/php.ini
change post_max_size = 8M to post_max_size = 0
exit and save.
reboot.

You will now have larger uploads available.

PiMAME Stickers

The first batch of stickers have gone out.  If you haven’t received yours in the next few days, please feel free to email me and I will put one in the mail.

Thanks!  Have a great night.

Friday Post: PiMAME 0.6 Beta 4

Hey All,

I’m happy to announce PiMAME 0.6 Beta 4!  You will need a 4GB SD Card for this release.  The updates and new items required a bump in space.

pimame_small

This release includes:

  • Neo Geo support with the GNGeo emulator!!! (Full Speed and Audio)
  • Neo Geo roms and bios are stored in the same Roms folder.
  • Raspbian upgraded and updated.

Known issues:

  • GNGeo does not work with the XArcade Tankstick at the moment.  You must use a keyboard.
  • GNGeo small screen size.  Will not do scaling through composite.  Will scale up through HDMI.
  • I have been informed of the slowness with AdvMENU.  I have confirmed the issue and will be working on that.

Go Get It!!!!
