Friday Post: 2017! New Year New Stuff!

Hey All!

Happy New Year! Less than 99 days till the baby is due. I’m building stuff for the nursery, getting stuff ready. Feels more like demolition because it was our game / media room and most of the week was spent moving stuff out.

I installed my first ceiling fan today! Feels good, feels accomplished.

I am also working on a homemade DDR pad for Stepmania. It’s still not great on the Pi2/Pi3. I can get it running at 30FPS, but the audio is too choppy. I want to try to offload the audio to a USB sound card and just output it via HDMI, but I don’t know if that will help.

Found an awesome Mario mushroom power up beanie. ¬†This kid is going to be a geek ūüėÄ

The PiPlay Advance board is coming along! ¬†I am super happy with it and it’s almost ready to release!

We are currently testing out a variety of buttons, but it’s coming together really nicely!

Have a great week all!

P.S.: In sadder news, at 91, my Grandmother Bernice passed away peacefully two weeks ago.  I was very hesitant about posting this, because it makes it feel so real now.  She lived an amazing life, and got to hear that she was going to be a great grandmother.  I miss her, and I love her, and it sucked that Hurricane Matthew hit the same week as the funeral, so everything had to be rushed.

Thank you all for being there for me.

Updates Updates Updates

Hey All,

Sorry for the long delay in updates. ¬†Been extremely busy with the campaign and some personal projects. ¬†I needed the break but I’m back.

Good News

The Florida primaries are over, and it is only myself and a Democrat in the race for Florida House District 49. ¬†I am currently polling in the high 30s, which is pretty damn good considering I’m an Independent¬†with about $1000 left running against a politician who has raised over $100,000.

Does money help? ¬†Of course, but the more I talk to people and tell them my platform, and more importantly, what type of person I am, the more support I am getting. ¬†I am so thankful for the wonderful support my friends and family are showing me during this campaign. ¬†It’s been amazing so far. ¬†Can’t wait until the November election ūüėÄ

The PiPlay Advance board is coming together! ¬†We have another iteration we are getting ready to test! ¬†More news on that soon ūüėÄe6e6230260da234de488a393ef5bd7cb_preview_featured

I’ve been playing a TON of Overwatch lately, and in a few of the maps, you can run around some arcade machines. ¬†They look like traditional Japanese Candy Cabs, and I love them. ¬†I really want to make my own real¬†version sometime, BUT, I was able to do the next best thing. ¬†A modder released the model files for the arcade into Source Film Maker, and I was able to export them OBJs, convert them to STLs, and then clean them up in Tinkercad, so I could 3D print them.

Sad News

In sad news, last month my Grandfather passed away.  I want to thank the other campaigns for offering their condolences and being decent about the whole thing.  It took a toll on my family of course.  Right after he passed, my Grandmother went into the hospital (for what looks like a heart attack), but she is doing better.  It was just a heck of a month.

Today is also 9/11, and I would be remiss if I didn’t mention anything about it. ¬†I remember 15 years ago, a senior in high school, watching the events unfold on TV in a class room. ¬†The administrators were going room by¬†room turning off TVs and telling the teachers to go back to their lessons. ¬†I’m glad my teacher turned it back on when they left.

At 17, all I could think about was how my cousins lived in NYC at the time, and hoping they were OK, but not really worried, because they were also kids, what would they be doing close to the towers?  I remember a lot of confusion and worry about what was next.  I remember a lot of ignorant and hateful comments being spoken in the following weeks, and a lot of misinformation from my fellow classmates.  I was just numb.

15 years later, the big thing I take from 9/11 is that we should never respond to these tragic events with reactionary legislation. ¬†The PATRIOT Act is probably one of the worst bills that was pushed through during that time. ¬†In hindsight we see that, but we can’t forget the lesson in case of future events.

Thank you.

Friday Post: Cool Stuff

Hey All,

Got some cool stuff to post!

First off, got my Pi3 and have pics to show.

IMG_20160305_123135035_HDR IMG_20160305_123142557_HDR IMG_20160305_123151811_HDR IMG_20160305_123201893 IMG_20160305_123221663 IMG_20160305_123230360 IMG_20160305_123255506 IMG_20160305_123303098 IMG_20160305_123338411Love this device so much!

BUT, what I’m more excited to show off is a very early prototype of a project a coworker and I are working on!

12722257_10104959026967052_78897063_oIt’s a Raspberry Pi Zero powered portable gaming system styled after the Nintendo GameBoy Advance using an SPI TFT and some other little cool things.

This is the first PCB I’ve ever helped design, and I placed the order for it this week. ¬†Boards shipped today, which means they will get here between 8 and 40 days. ¬†Argh, the waiting sucks!

On another note, Pokken Tournament came out today for the Wii U. ¬†It’s a really cool Tekken inspired Pokemon fighting game and so far I am loving it! ¬†My Nintendo Network ID is SSilver2k2 so if you want to fight, add me ūüėÄ

I also picked up some really cool Nintendo retro consoles this week.

This is the Sharp Famicom Twin.  It is the Japanese version of the NES (Famicom) and the Famicom Disk System combined into one unit.  I also picked up the Family BASIC addon which allows you to do rudimentary programs in BASIC (HuBASIC) for the NES.  BASIC programs can be saved and loaded off of a cassette tape player, or loaded from any audio player.

Have a good weekend all!

Friday Post: IAAPA 2015

Hey All,

Happy Friday!

I was lucky enough to be able to attend a day of IAAPA again this year. ¬†IAAPA is THE worldwide Arcade and Amusement expo. ¬†I’m fortunate that it takes place in Orlando, FL, otherwise I wouldn’t be able to get this opportunity.

One of the highlights of the trade show was that Sega was there showing off the new to North America “Luigi’s Mansion Arcade”. ¬†This has been in Japan for two years now, but this is the first time (other than one location test) that a Luigi’s Mansion Arcade unit has been in the States. ¬†It’s a very neat game. ¬†It’s an on rails shooter game, where your gun is an all in one flashlight and vacuum cleaner. ¬†You stun the ghosts with the flashlight, then suck them into your vacuum. ¬†It’s a lot of fun, and I hope it gets translated and a few places pick them up.

In Raspberry Pi related news, the Mag Pi has just released their Official Raspberry Pi Projects Book!

Pi-Projects_Cover-495x700

200 pages of things to do with your Raspberry Pi!

Enjoy all!  Have a great weekend!

Friday Post: Make Magazine!

Hey All,

Happy Friday!

This week just flew by, but projects are going really well, and I am hoping to have a cool announcement in the next week or so. ¬†In the meantime…

PiPlay was featured in Make Magazine!!!!!!!

I’m seriously fanboying over here. ¬†To have my project featured in Make is like having a researcher’s paper featured in Science or Nature magazine. ¬†I’m just blown away.

The article is about making a home arcade system and controlling the games with an Arduino Esplora.

Friday Post: Raspberry Pi Case and No Starch Press Humble Bundle!

Happy Friday!

This was a long week. ¬†I had three things to do at work. ¬†2 of them took 20 minutes, the last one took 4 days to finish. ¬†I’ve also apparently become addicted to Splatoon on the Wii U.

Official Raspberry Pi Case

The Raspberry Pi Foundation has come out with their official Raspberry Pi Case. ¬†I haven’t gotten my hands on one yet but it looks really nice.

Humble Bundle

I’m a huge fan of No Starch Press, and I love Humble Bundle’s bundles. ¬†I picked up the last No Starch Humble Bundle and it was great. ¬†This time it’s no different.

This bundle’s list of books:

PiPlay

Mark and I have been working on our remote controller concept that I posted a while ago on the blog. ¬†I’m really impressed with how it’s turning out. ¬†I couldn’t ask for a better team member. ¬†I’m excited to share that in the upcoming weeks.

Friday Post: Ubuntu Mate on Pi2

Hey All,

I do not know how the Splatoon box art got into the title. ¬†That’s crazy. ¬†Anyways, I tested out Ubuntu Mate for the Raspberry Pi2, and it’s impressive. ¬†Everything feels really responsive, Firefox on it is super smooth. ¬†It looks like a good build. ¬†The only problem is that it’s only for the Pi2. ¬†A few years ago I switched all my installs from Ubuntu to vanilla Debian, and I’ve been enjoying that. ¬†Ubuntu Unity didn’t sit well with me, but on Mate, it feels very much XFCE, so I like it.

The next version of PiPlay is coming along, going to be updating to the next version of Raspian, and some various little fixes. ¬†Can’t wait!

Splatoon has been so much fun.  If you have a Wii U it is so worth it.

Have a good weekend all.

Friday Post: BeagleBone Splatoon

Hey All,

Happy Friday!

Today Nintendo released a whole bunch of new Amiibos that were highly sought after.  I was in line at WalMart at midnight and had a lot of fun.  Met a bunch of cool people in line.  We were laughing and comparing game collections, and then the electronics guy comes out and tell us there are 6 Amiibo.  Not 6 of the 9 characters.  Just 6 Amiibo total.  3 Pac-Man and 3 Charizard.  I was 7th in line.  We could only laugh at the ridiculousness.  On the plus side, I picked up Splatoon! It is just as amazing as the demo!  If you have a Wii U and like FPS / 3PS this is a must.

The only Amiibo I was after was the Silver Mario.  I mean, come on, Silverman, Silver Mario.  It was a must buy.  There was no line at my GameStop so I was able to get one without a problem, it was just that was all they had.  This whole product line is crazy.  People going crazy over little figures.  Gotta catch em all!

In other news,  I picked up a Beagle Bone Black and I am working on testing PiPlay on that.  Initial tests look good.  It runs Ubuntu, and has some quirks, but I was able to get Mednafen, CaveStory, and DGen working without issue.

Look for more updates regarding that soon!

Have a good weekend all.

Friday Post: F-Zero AX

Hey All,

So, I used to collect arcade games, but when I moved, I had to sell my collection. ¬†Now that I own a house with a garage, I’m able to start rebuilding my mini arcade (and using PiPlay in the mean time ūüôā ).

One of my favorites and prized machines was an F-Zero AX. ¬†This is the companion to the GameCube’s F-Zero GX. ¬†It has a magnetic card reader, which allows you to save your pilot data between racers, and has a gamecube memory card slot which can access your save data.

I got very lucky that my original machine went up for sale, so I was able to repurchase it!!

01 - Bt1urXb 02 - aK75tBD 03 - SotnL5Y 04 - Lkb3tcm 05 - X69U3fp 06 - 4N1yGFU 07 - uHN6KvI 08 - 5Ew0Exk 09 - 8dSMkaX 10 - WtA0RDh 11 - mVMRQNf

The board it uses is called the TriForce, which is a regular GameCube with more memory.  The game is on optical media, but rather than using gamecube optical discs, it uses GD-ROMs.  Yep, the same media used in the Dreamcast.  In fact, the platform is a collaboration between Sega, Namco, and Nintendo (hence, TriForce).  The racing cabinet is a standard Namco / Sega model.

It’s really awesome, and I’m so glad to have it back.

Have a good weekend!
